Weight loss diet programs are quite popular among overweight individuals and most of those suffering from obesity take recourse to these diets for losing weight. While some of the diets are regarded as healthy and high in nutritional value, many of the quick weight loss diets are actually quite harmful and often may have negative effects on the body. Therefore choosing the perfect diet is a very important task.

In case of the wide variety of weight loss diet programs that are advertised with much fanfare, more often most individuals are confused regarding the fact whether a particular diet type is suitable for them or whether they are effective in resulting in weight loss. There have been several diet programs that have been introduced from time to time and many of them have proved to be extremely popular and effective. The Sonoma diet is a variant of the Mediterranean diet and is similar in various ways to the very famous Zone diet or the Atkins diet programs. The Sonoma diet was conceived and planned by Connie Guttersen. It is necessary to note that the Sonoma diet has not been categorized as a form of low carbohydrate diet though it is true that this diet recommends very limited consumption of sugary substances. The Sonoma diet is a well planned and meticulous diet program and therefore the rate of weight loss is also guaranteed. The Sonoma diet is divided into three different stages which are referred to as ‘waves’ and this weight loss diet program requires the consumption of certain specific food items which are known as ‘power foods’. These power foods have to be consumed in limited proportions across the various stages of the Sonoma diet and after following this plan systematically, it will be possible for one to attain weight loss successfully. The power foods comprise of ten significant food items which include grapes, almonds, tomato, broccoli, whole grain, spinach, olive oil, blueberries, strawberries and bell peppers. In the very first phase of the Sonoma diet, these food items will be allowed for consumption in very limited quantities. Sugar intake is also limited during this stage. This is followed by the second stage which is more relaxing and it allows the consumption of a wide range of foods and the limitation on consumption is also reduced. In the last stage the rate of weight loss is more gradual and more food items are allowed for consumption.
